We have stepped back from the constraints of the western style hospital, incorporating the UN sustainable development goals and intelligent climate engineering to develop a modular hospital design.
The facility is made up of individual modules arranged on a grid, where each module can function independently or be connected to any other module. On-site water and waste management, as well as natural energy generation and effective natural ventilation are optimized according to site and climate conditions, making the sustainable hospital adaptable to a wide variety of environmental conditions - the challenges of desert, rainforest, or permafrost can all be holistically addressed in the design. If necessary the facility is able to function independent of existing infrastructure.
The hospital is constructed using innovative construction materials; the composite panel materials are made from 100% recycled content, and can be prefabricated locally in every location. Relevant building materials and parts are sourced locally if possible, so that the hospital has a positive economic impact on the community from the earliest phases. Both fabrication and deployment save time and in combination with the modular structure allow for a very quick begin of operation.
Partnerships with leading manufacturers of medical equipment allow us to provide a modern technological standard of care.
A central part of The Sustainable Hospital is supporting the hospital once operations have commenced. Our goal is a low-impact operation integrated into the local community, maintaining high standards of hygiene and patient comfort. Independent of local infrastructure the facility can be run with 100% renewable energy, generated and stored on-site. Water and waste are also harvested and treated on-site, resulting in a self-sufficient, CO2 neutral building. The facility is designed for seismic resistance and stability, with the design allowing for modular upkeep and continued operation even in the face of damages to any individual module.
The hospital creates local jobs during both construction and operation, with training and education of hospital personnel a key goal of the project. Cooperation with local health care professionals and community leaders during all phases of development allows for a hospital effectively adapted to local cultural norms, and a facility able to fulfil multiple functions - health education, distribution of vaccines and medication, emergency response coordination, or functioning as a community center.
We have managed to conceptualize a design that is both turnkey, where a complete product is delivered, installed and maintained, and entirely holistic, in that it is adapted to a broad spectrum of population, infrastructure and environmental conditions. We accompany our hospitals up to and including demolition in a cradle-to-cradle process where no resources are wasted.
